Washington, D.C., March 23, 2010- The Johnson Group, the Emmy-nominated company that created the highly acclaimed, “Paper Clips,” announces the release of their newest award-winning documentary, “Bedford: The Town They Left Behind,” on DVD. Distributed domestically by Vanguard Cinema, the DVD is available today at retailers, including Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble, and online via Netflix.

Directed by Joe Fab and Elliot Berlin, “Bedford: The Town They Left Behind” explores the universal issues of the costs of service to one’s country through the eyes of small-town Bedford, Virginia. Bedford lost more men per capita on D-Day, June 6th 1944, than any other American town. The film also explores the lives of the new, fresh-faced members of that same unit sixty years later, as they are deployed to today’s conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. This cross-generational story is a moving and thought-provoking look at the sacrifice of those who go to war, and those they leave behind.

“Bedford: The Town They Left Behind” was honored at the 2009 G.I. Film Festival and recently won the coveted Movieguide Faith and Freedom Award in Los Angeles.

For additional information about retailers, or to book a special screening of the film, please contact Amy D. Jones, ajones@thejgroup.com, 703-356-4004, or visit www.bedfordthemovie.com.

“Bedford: The Town They Left Behind”, Documentary, DVD, Directors: Joe Fab, Elliot Berlin, 71 minutes, March 23, 2010.

START OF THE VIRGINIA FILM FESTIVAL-After a night with marching bands, and a morning of a Charlie Chaplin classic, I thought it’d be fitting to sit down and give our first report from the 22nd Annual Virginia Film Festival. Charlottesville is beautiful this time of year, and in addition to anticipating the energy of Virginia filmmakers and cult movie stars, it is a great time to be out and about.

Thursday night, we attended the North American premier of “Marching Band” and felt the love for Virginia films. The highlight was a pre-screening performance of both the Virginia State Marching and University of Virginia marching bands. So fun, and great to get us in the mood. The film chronicles these bands and their experience with the 2008 US Presidential election. For more on the film, check out their website: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxzi3UvtGRY.

I had a couple of big film firsts this morning at the screening of Charlie Chaplin’s classic, “Modern Times.” This was my first time seeing a Chaplin film (a shame, I know) and my first silent film experience. I enjoyed the instant feeling of nostalgia, but also the brilliance of scoring. Scores are very important for any film, but it’s ability to be a character, or rather, an extension of the character actors on the screen in silent films brings it into an entirely different perspective. I could go on for pages about the genius of Charlie Chaplin from creation to physicality, but I won’t. But, if you haven’t seen it, you need to!

So, we’re here, taking a breather, enjoying great Virginia wine and the comfort of the VA Film Festival filmmaker lounge. Way to go on this one, guys!! We’re getting ready to try and go see John Waters deliver his semi-autobiographical one-man show. Crossing our fingers to get in!

Our “Bedford” screening is tomorrow night at 5pm. We’ll be sure to check back in and fill you in on how it goes. Be sure to follow the VFF on twitter: http://twitter.com/VaFilmFest
